Mr. & Mrs. Charles C., a School Board Member with a son in the class, expressed great enthusiasm for the results he has personally seen. "I think the system is a marvelous thing! Finally, Rick is now interested in school. The system did this! Our average child from an average home was not getting anything out of school. Whether it's a gimmick or not, we know it works with Rick."
Mrs. Ann P, a kindergarten teacher, " The self-discipline part of the system is beyond comparison. I know from my own observation of Mr. Harrison's classroom next to mine. Tom's language has improved tremendously. He now corrects me! I knew from past years of observing Harrison's system that I would put Tom in his classroom. All the teachers at Sunnymead Elementary School have praised the program. Now, I'm really glad that I enrolled Tom. He's improved tremendously!"
Mrs. Dorothy P, "Debbie has changed completely. She has a lot more friends and doesn't like to miss school." And Debbie says, "When you cheat in this system, you cheat friends, while last year, if you cheated, nobody cared."
Mr. & Mrs. William K, Black parents, "Last year he gave up and wouldn't try. I think this system is the greatest thing that has come along in education in the last 20 years."
Mr. & Mrs. Jack M, "Pam use to be a selfish person. But not anymore. She has learned to accept people for what they are and not for what they can do for her."
Mrs. Janet K, "We have long wished for a way to motivate Mike." And Mike's reply, "It's kind of like real life. The system has helped me to realize that you have to work hard and finish your work if you want to enjoy things you like. This system allows you to move twice as fast (academically) as any other class.
Mr. & Mrs. Jerald S, "I wish this system had been put in a long time ago. Now I have no problem with Wayne in relationship to his attitude toward school and his work. He even goes out of his way to help other neighborhood children with their school work."
Mr. & Mrs. Henry M. asked their child Sherry, "Do kids in this system get in trouble like they did last year?" And Sherry's answer, "No! Because they don't want their points taken from them. And they care about this a lot."
Mr. & Mrs. Joe C, "It's the best system I've ever seen. He now shows interest. He never did before. Bobby use to get sick in class from nervousness, now we don't have that problem anymore."
Mr. & Mrs. Larry S, "The system has helped Mike a great deal. He comes home and wants to do his homework without my screaming and hollering at him. It's like playing around with real money." And Mike says, "I get more help now in our groups!"
Mr. & Mrs. L.M. S, "Debbie has a lot more interest in school this year." And Debbie says, "Last year there use to be a big long line at the teacher's desk. Now you raise your hand and get help right away because of the 'Student Teachers'."
Major Carlton M, "Leslie's attitude now is to learn - to want to learn." And Leslie says, "Working in groups has helped me to understand people. To work and earn things gives me a good feeling I like."
Mrs. James S, a Spanish speaking parent, "Joe use to say that his school work was too hard and he couldn't do it. But since he has been in this class he never says it and won't go out to play until he is finished."
Mr. & Mrs. Luverne M, whose son has a hearing problem, "Previously there has always been the question of failure versus making it. This year there has been no question about making it, but how well can I make it. This has been the first year that has been a real joy for Steve to go to school."
Mr. & Mrs. J.C. M, ""I'm very well satisfied with the system. We knew about the program before and requested you for Melody."
Mrs. Joseph T. "He is a lot more interested in school this year."
Mr. & Mrs. Alex P, "Before, when Nancy had a cold, she would stay home, now she won't."
Mrs. Barbara C, "Debbie's main problem has been trying to get someone to help her in the classroom. Now she is excited about school and never complains anymore."
Mr. & Mrs. Harry K, "The system builds enthusiasm and I see how enthused Gary is, enough to encourage others to want to get into the system."
Mrs. Janette S, "The system helps out here at home as well as at school. Yolanda has to be self-reliant since I work to support the family."
Mrs. Mary W, "Karen has made tremendous advances this year, and I don't think she could have made it in junior high school if she hadn't had this class.
Mrs. Richard A, "Andy hasn't missed a day of school this year. He just loves it."
Mrs. Rollie R. H, "Piper has been so excited about school this year!"
Mrs. Charles S, a preacher's wife and a substitute elementary school teacher, "Charlie had no idea of the workings of the business world. Now he does! He knows all about 'bankruptcy' and other business terms which before had no meaning. He now can relate classroom happenings to daily living. Arithmetic used in the class applies to life, now! Also, when a child goes to the bathroom in a conventional classroom and wastes time or loses his pencil, he doesn't really care. But in this system, the child realizes he is only hurting himself. It makes the child responsible for his actions and the child realizes it. Charlie has also learned how to be a leader which requires many things - such as being patient and how to work with people successfully. The system allows the pupil the opportunity to thoroughly understand any subject taught and to ask question and receive replies if he doesn't. His outlook on life now has been broadened. He understands the workings of finance, government and the value of self-reliance. He now attempts to do self responsible things on his own. He even picks up his clothes now and he never would do this before." But little 11 year old Charlie S., the classroom's "Banker" for most of the year, says it best. "I don't know why I like the system. It's just fun! I like to work and earn things."
Now UNDERSTAND THIS: The testimonials you just read were NOT gleaned from a number of different classrooms - instead, only ONE! Most other system classrooms could probably offer similar results. Nevertheless, gratifying as it was to Harrison to have so many parents and pupils pleased with the system, he also discovered there was one parent who wasn't pleased. We won't reveal her name. This is what she said (now don't laugh because she was very serious). "I don't like the system because my boy is always reading some darn book and it's difficult to get him to help me when I need to go to the store or do chores around the house!" What's even more tragic, this boy was now a top student and never was before. But as someone once said: "You can't win'em all!"
Now Let's See What Some System Teachers (& a few other Educators) Say:
Mrs. Kay S, Kindergarten teacher at Arnold Heights School, says this after using the System for a year and a half: "Now even the youngest kids can experience self accountability and self responsibility. I innovated on Harrison's system and made it applicable to my kindergarten classroom. I would love to compare my class with any other conventional kindergarten. My kids can now do what others of their age can't." She tells how she tried to use conventional management methods during "Summer School," but needed to return to system methods. Child management methods, she believes, are just too much work, discouraging, and stressful.
Mr. Leo E, a 5th grade teacher using his own innovations in combination with the System (for more than 6 years), "In my room I teach the American way of life using self discipline and individual initiative. We can't teach democracy unless you have such things in a classroom. A self accountability program provides it." In a personal, one on one, interview, Mr. Leo E. revealed the following: "First, you have immediate control. Second, you have immediate motivation, and third, you have immediate involvement. Also, it isn't the person doing it. It's the system! I've had 'Class Presidents' who manage the classroom even better than I do. The tests will not measure what's really happening to kids in this system, which is too bad. If it could, then you would really have something. I've had parents tell me they have had to make their kids stop 'schoolwork' and go to bed. Another thing with the system, teachers don't have to extensively plan on motivating pupils with fancy lessons."
Mr. Gene D, 4th grade teacher, "It's the only comprehensive teaching method available today. It covers all of the things teachers should be teaching but can't when using management methods.
Mrs. H., 2nd grade teacher, "My parents were delighted once they understood how the program worked. The kids put up their own bulletin boards and love it. It's their work and not mine. They love earning the points and I love having them do so."
Mrs. Alice W., 6th grade and then 8th grade teacher, "We're told to teach all children, individually. But this is difficult using management methods. Now, using the system, I can utilize my students' self motivation. It also helps teachers to be consistent. You can't favor one student over another in the system. I learned more about my students on my first auctioned trip than I did the rest of the school year. The system works as well in a subject centered as a self-contained classroom. All you need to do is tailor it to the needs of older pupils. Kids now work with me instead of against me as they did before."
Mrs. Betty D, junior high school math teacher, "Teaching with this system is so satisfying that I just wouldn't use any other (after 23 years of teaching without it)."
Mrs. Ann P, 6th grade teacher (after teaching primary grades for many years), "In conventional classrooms, it's difficult to control students. I had all kinds of trouble coming from kindergarten to sixth grade. The older the kids the harder they are to manage. The System changes all that. When you start the program everything changes for the better. The kids become completely self-managed no matter their age. There is no rudeness or other discipline problems. The system is wonderful! I recommend it!"
Mr. H., a substitute teacher in many classrooms of Riverside County, "After walking into 'Al's' class (cold turkey), I was astounded. No discipline problems. No directional problems! Concentrated effort toward work! Everything was completely self-controlled within the classroom. It's a pleasure to be a substitute in a classroom using this program."
Mr. P., a substitute teacher in many classrooms of Riverside County, "When I walked into Chuck McNutt's 6th grade classroom, I discovered the class to be completely self-governing. I was astounded. At first I felt unneeded. It took me an hour to adjust to kids successfully operating a classroom without the need of a teacher. Once I adjusted, this was the smoothest running classroom I've ever been in. There were no discipline problems. I merely acted as a teacher and the pupils acted as eager students. The kids did everything properly. No job for me at all - except as a purveyor of knowledge. I'm convinced the teacher, (with a proper lesson plan) could go to a class on Monday to start things moving then return on Friday. Everything would be accomplished by the pupils in the meantime. I think this is THE best program I've ever seen!"
Chuck McNutt, 4th - 6th grade teacher (now retired after over 30 years public service) and also a Board Member of the "Self Accountable Children's Society" foundation (as cited earlier), "All pupils (slow or fast) learn much faster with this system. The transition from management to self-management is very smooth and easy. Any teacher could use it and would love it"
Mr. Charles Billings, High School Teacher at Fountain Valley High School, has so many nice things to say about the system that it is impractical to list them all.
Mrs. Caroline Apt, 4th & 5th grade teacher in a minority school for underachievers, "The children have taken an interest in school and have done what I thought would have been impossible."
Mrs. Olive M. Bonneau, Special Teacher of Reading in a Torrance School District, "Boys who had never read a book before began reading two or three books a week."
Mrs. Mavis Campbell, 6th grade teacher in the Orange County area (& wife of one of the Editors of the Anaheim Bulletin newspaper), "The first day that I used the Harrison System was the quietest day in two years that I had had these pupils. Quiet, not because they had been subdued, but because they were enthused. Enthused, because they had an immediate and clear objective. The Harrison System is the most exciting technique that I have seen in 13 years of teaching."
Mrs. Elaine Larson, Teacher in a private school catering to state supported problem children, "I can not praise the system highly enough. Sincere thanks for introducing Schowers School and me to the Harrison System."
Mr. Raymond E. Tanner, "Harrison's" former Principal, Director of Personnel, and finally District Superintendent of Moreno Valley Unified School District, in California. "The Harrison System has successfully innovated student leadership in recognizing rights and privileges of fellow classmates toward the development and understanding of the democratic principles as they apply to living within our enterprising society. My nine years of observation validates to me that the above is realistic and in tune with the times."
Mr. Robert Harr, former School Board Member of the Santa Ana Unified School District, says (in a news clipping about the Harrison System), "Students are given the opportunity to develop at double their previous rate. The classroom gives the student a realistic view of life and allows him to practice it."
The following quotes come from jotted down conversations Harrison has had with parents who didn't want their names or identity used since they felt the information was just too personal for others to see! Nonetheless, this information will give the reader an idea of System expectations at home without revealing identities.
Mary S.(4 kids) "Why do I like it? It eliminates work and my guilt. As a single mother, I have to have self-reliant kids - and now I have them."
Mr. & Mrs. B. (5 kids) "The System makes parents consistent. The kids insist on 'fairness.' You can't favor one over the other!"
Sara C. (2 kids) "It self motivates kids! This is great for working moms."
Dorothy W. (3 kids) "Self motivated kids offer sanity to single parents."
Joe C. (2 kids) "It delays gratification and trains for self responsibility."
Wanda J. (6 kids) "It builds think-for-yourself latch-key kids for me."
Shirley T. (4 kids) "I appreciate the 'Family Council.' Now it's the family against the lawbreaker, not just the adult manager against the child."
Mr. & Mrs. Q. (9 kids) "It creates kids who want to help financially and with chores. The System is a real necessity at our house."
Mr. & Mrs. R. (5 kids) "It's wonderful! It eliminates fights in our home."
Joan S. (3 kids) "It creates tranquility and harmony automatically and habitually."
John T. (4 kids) "It prevents child abuse. Now I can 'fine' the kids and don't have to slap them!"
Mr. & Mrs. M. (2 kids) "The System provides quality time to be with kids for working parents. In the past there was no time for love and nurturing."
Bob Y. (3 kids) "It cuts embarrassment when kids act up in society and creates pride when they don't."
Mr. & Mrs. P. (3 kids) "Builds complete trust between adults and kids."
Ray N. (1 kid) "Teaches kids complexity of monetary and business transactions. It obviously builds future entrepreneurs and leaders."
Mr. & Mrs. O. (2 kids) "Creates loving, caring, and trusting children who treat money only as a scorekeeper and as a means of achieving self accountability. It builds a conscience the best way of all, through experience rather than talk. People should know that no one can beat or lecture a conscience into a kid."
Trudy D. (3 kids) "In the beginning, I thought offering material rewards to be wrong since some child experts said it was. Now I realize that these so-called experts were mistaken. Before, without a valuable scorekeeper for self accountability, I HAD to manage the kids. The more I managed the more they seemed to need it. My stress and work multiplied. Now I seem to have time for everything without any stress. It's wonderful! We keep these precepts before us: 'Earned rewards, yes! Bribes, no! And, definitely, fines for neglected work!'"
Mr. & Mrs. L.(6 kids) "It offers parents more acceptable power for good over their children than they ever had before. The 'Constitution,' 'Home Laws' and the 'Judge & Jury' aspect of the System provide all of the control that parents need."
Mr. & Mrs. R. (5 kids) "We love the way voting power is divided at 'Council Meetings.' Parents have control until children can exercise proper decisions. Yet, the children feel included in the decision making. Kids can air their opinions with a partial vote, depending upon their age and ability."
Mr. & Mrs. K. (3 kids) "A System family is all for one and one for all. The process welds families together like nothing else could. We now discuss problems together and discover solutions that might never be thought of alone."
Mr. & Mrs. U. (7 kids) "The System even helps adults bring a marriage closer together. There is no bickering or fighting between parents. One parent who is mean or even disrespectful of the other has the weight of the whole family against him or her, and immediately knows it. So it never occurs. The sharing of power in the System prevents many problems. A fine in 'Home Points' often wakes up the individual whether its a child or an adult. Misbehavior in our family is a thing of the past."
Bill V. (3 kids) "I like the way real money contributions can be made to run our household. Then the subsequent division of the System scorekeeper results in an ingenious way for children to understand household responsibilities."
Sally A. (1 kid) ""I love the way the manuals explain things so simply that almost anyone can understand how to do it. Moreover, they seem to answer every objection I've heard from child management experts.
Kay E. (5 kids) "The manuals cover all age levels, from three to the teens. My kids ages run the same.
Mr. & Mrs. Q. (3 kids) "The System distinguishes between what is the child's duty and what isn't. Non-performed duties bring a fine. Properly performed work earns a reward. A civic duty involves no reward and teaches the required lesson. NO reward, forever, other than a smile or praise, teaches the child how to be a slave. Our System kids now understand the 'freedom loving 'difference."
Sam Z. (2 kids) "It's so pleasurable to not have to worry about my actions as a shining example for the kids. Self accountable kids think for themselves. All of my kids know that they pay for mistakes and that I will eventually pay for mine."
Mr. & Mrs. V. (5 kids) "We love the Systems' consequences and self-punishment. Every child knows how much it costs before acting and can blame only himself or herself. We cry with the rascal, but, secretly we thank God that each has learned the lesson as cheaply and painlessly as possible while a child - where it's not so costly."
